The Civic Centre in Plymouth has a polarising reputation amongst locals, with some loving it and others hating it. One thing that is for sure, is that the local skateboarders belong here and this shouldn't change. However, the city council planning committee has approved a redevelopment plan that will allow people to live in the towering former council offices on Armada Way. The estimated cost of the £40 million scheme is for 144 flats to be built in the vacant 14-floor tower. Let's hope the residents to be are chilled.
Additionally, there will be a mix of commercial uses on the ground and first floor, including restaurants and bars. The public areas will also be improved, enhancing Civic Square. The planning committee praised the scheme for bringing the listed building back into use and supporting the regeneration of the city centre. However, there were concerns about the new facade design, which would change the building's appearance. The 20th Century Society has objected to the alterations, and some councillors have expressed that they differ too much from the original design. Nevertheless, it was revealed that the original facade is structurally unsound and needs to be replaced.
Unfortunately, there isn't much reliable information available at the moment regarding the long-term use of skateboarding. We have heard some conflicting rumours, but we will keep you updated as we learn more.
